Galway’s Jane Ann Meehan of Athenry AC produced a superb marathon performance in the Manchester Marathon on Sunday.

The Athenry AC athlete clocked a time of 2hrs 54 minutes, which was a first for her under the magic three hour barrier, and placed her sixth female overall.

A 53rd-minute goal from Lynsey McKey was enough for hosts Galway WFC to see off Castlebar Celtic in their final game of the Continental Tyres WNL on Sunday in Eamonn Deacy Park.

An opening half saw some chances, but both defences where dominant. However an injury to an assistant referee after 30 minutes caused a lengthy delay in play, and after the game restarted, neither side could find the net before the break.

Corofin's All-Ireland club football winning midfielder Daithí Burke will not be available to the county football squad this season as he is going to focus his inter-county aspirations totally with Anthony Cunningham's hurlers over the coming months.

Burke, a talented player in both codes, won an u-21 football All-Ireland at centre back in 2013 and he has also played senior intercounty championship football in the past year.
