Former Connacht and Ireland captain for Hall of Fame

Former Irish rugby player Ciaran Fitzgerald will be inducted into the Connacht Clan Hall of Fame on Saturday.

The former Connacht and Ireland hooker will join recent inductee Gavin Duffy, and stalwarts Eric Elwood and Johnny O’Connor on the wall of the Clan Bar at the Galway Sportsground following Saturday’s Pro 12 fixture against Glasgow.

Fitzgerald represented Connacht 29 times over 16 seasons, including 10 as captain, while also representing UCG.

With 25 Ireland caps, he led the side to the Five Nations and Triple Crown titles in 1982 and 1985 and captained the Lions on a tour to New Zealand.

He went on to coach Ireland, leading them to within minutes of a World Cup semi-final in 1991 when Ireland were denied by a late Michael Lynagh try at Lansdowne Road.

The Connacht Clan, Connacht Rugby's official supporters' club, has been honouring Connacht legends in its Hall of Fame since its inception in 2011.
