A benefit gig to support a building project in Haiti will take place on Saturday (September 5) in Galway.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Northern Hemisphere with a population of 8.5 million. A mountainous country not much bigger then Munster, some six million people try to exist on less than $2 a day, with unemployment and illiteracy rates at over 50 per cent. A charity called Haven sends volunteers to Haiti to build much needed homes. and next month Cong native Ben Wrafter will travel to Haiti for a building project as part of a group of 250 volunteers. A benefit gig will be held on Saturday to help Wrafter raise funds for Haven. The gig will feature local musicians Greg Cotter and friends, Dave Cazabon, and Soundhorse. Tickets are €10 and are available from the Amnesty Shop in Middle Street. www.havenpartnership.com.

Irish suicide charity 3Ts will hold a series of candlelight vigils around the country to mark World Suicide Prevention Day next week. A vigil will take place in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Friday September 11 from 8pm to 9pm. The vigil is for family and friends to come together to remember those who have lost their lives through suicide and to raise awareness of the issue of suicide prevention in Ireland.
