The developing world charity GOAL is urging local sports fans to wear their favourite team colours to school or work tomorrow (Friday ) and raise money for some of the world’s poorest people.
Jersey Day gives sports enthusiasts the opportunity to wear their favourite jersey for the day and make a small contribution to support GOAL’s many humanitarian and lifesaving projects, says Ronan Scully, the charity’s local representative.
Thousands of people from more than 900 businesses, organisations and schools took part in the event last year and helped to raise more than €270,000 for some of the poorest people in Africa, Asia and the Americas.
“GOAL Jersey Day is fast becoming one of the most popular fundraising events in the country as more and more people take the opportunity to wear their jersey of choice for the day whether it is in school or at work,” he says. “Along with a host of other sports likedminded people, I will be joining in the fun and wearing my favourite jersey on Friday October 9 and we are calling on all schools, offices and organisations to sign up and ensure that as many people as possible take part.”
GOAL founder and chief executive John O’Shea says that the global recession is hitting “the poorest of the poor” the hardest and his organisation is relying on the support of Irish people now more than ever.
“We place great value upon the support we receive from schools, businesses and organisations in Ireland. Since our inception in 1977 they have helped us to respond to virtually every major disaster in almost 50 developing countries.
“GOAL Jersey Day donations, no matter how small, will have the maximum possible impact in the developing world thanks to our low administration costs.”
