Athenry to become Department of Agriculture HQ in the west

Athenry has been chosen as the location for the regional headquarters for the Department of Agriculture in the west it was announced this week.

The move is part of the reorganisation of the Department’s local offices on the Mellows Agriculture Campus in Athenry. It has been welcomed by Galway East TD Noel Treacy.

“I first put this proposal forward when I was Minister for Food and I re-iterated it last July and Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith gave me a commitment to give it consideration,” he said.

He said the location of the office in Athenry will be to the “advantage of both staff and the farmers of the county”. He also believes the co-location of all of the 75 staff of the Department of Agriculture and Food from Galway city, Loughrea, and Tuam, will create a “positive, centrally accessible working environment” for staff and clients, which will “maximise efficiency and services
