Inglourious Basterds

Thu, Aug 20, 2009

‘The Basterds’ are a motley crew of vengeful Jewish-American soldiers and a deranged German turncoat, led by the brutal and determined Lt Aldo Raine who wants his 100 Nazi scalps. It’s brilliant, bloody, darkly funny, with brilliant acting. To sum it up, if you’ve forgotten what great film making is, then this Quentin Tarantino film will certainly remind you.

The melodic metal behind an enchanting Latin sound

Thu, Aug 13, 2009

THE ENERGETIC sound of Túcan could easily be confused with that of a modern Spanish flameco group. With wild contemporary Spanish guitar playing mxed with an obvious passion for heavy metal, this Sligo band have found their niche, and are expanding and tweaking it at a rapid rate. Formed by Donal Gunne and Pearse Feeney from Sligo, the duo have been playing up and down the country for the last couple of years. As a duo playing Spanish guitar it is easy to compare them to the country’s most loved Spanish guitar duo, Rodrigo y Gabrielle, and this only compliments their level of ability. With similar style influences from classic and progressive rock to trad, and the somewhat bizarre mixture of gypsy guitar legends like Django Reinhardt, with progressive rock band Tool, the group have compiled a heavy thumping rock and roll, trad, and folk stomping sound. Energetic, euphoric, and loaded with passion.

Peadar De Burca divulges Why Men Marry at Town Hall

Thu, Aug 13, 2009

WRITER/PERFORMER Peadar De Burca returns to the Town Hall next week with the final episode of his hit comic trilogy dissecting the male psyche and its desires. Having already regaled audiences with his comic explorations of What Men Want and Why Men Cheat he now spills the beans on Why Men Marry. And as it transpires, De Burca is singularly well placed to discuss the topic because he married his Polish girlfriend Wanda just a couple of weeks ago. Indeed the material in the show largely charts his own odyssey toward that fateful phrase ‘I do’. “With the other shows I was interviewing other men about what they wanted and why they cheated, etc, but this one is much more about my own personal experiences,” he discloses over an afternoon coffee. “A friend came to see one of the other shows and they observed afterwards that whenever I was talking about my own experiences rather than those of people I’d interviewed it seemed to come more from the heart and consequently worked better. So I took that on board and this show is about my own marriage experiences and my wedding and my ideas about it all. Of course you’re still taking into account the people around you, your mother, your bride, her family and they’re all included in the story too.”

Cinema Review - The Ugly Truth

Thu, Aug 13, 2009

Another battle of the sexes romantic caper? I hear you groan. This flick has all the usual clichés one would expect, however, if you’re willing to leave your brain at the door and just accept the film for what it is - it’s just there for a few laughs and certainly not in line for Oscars or any awards - then you might, just might, find it entertaining.
