JOE LALLY was inspired to take up the bass guitar after seeing Minor Threat and Dag Nasty in action. It also inspired him to form a band - Fugazi.
Since 1987, Fugazi, in the words of Allmusic.com, have created “some of the most intelligent, invigorating, and undeniably musical post-hardcore rock’n’roll” ever produced by the American underground. They are also celebrated for their community activism, $5 shows, $10 CDs, and resistance to mainstream outlets.
Fugazi have been on hiatus since 2002 and Lally has pursued a variety of projects. Initially he teamed up with ex-Frodus members Shelby Cinca and Jason Hamacher as Black Sea to release a single. That combo changed their name to Decahedron and released a full-length album in 2004.
That same year Lally joined with sometime Red Hot Chilli Pepper John Frusciante and Josh Klinghoffer as Ataxia and released Automatic Writing. Lally also ran the small label Tolotta, releasing mostly singles and a few albums.
In 2006 Lally released his first solo record, There To Here, a sparse, bass-driven set, on the DC punk label Dischord.
