Clifden RNLI to name new inshore lifeboat ‘Joyce King’ in memory of a beloved wife

A new Atlantic 85 lifeboat for Clifden RNLI is to be officially named ‘Joyce King’ during a ceremony at the lifeboat station in the Connemara town at 2pm on Saturday November 9. The lifeboat, which went on service in June, was funded by a legacy from the late John Charles King in memory of his wife Joyce.

John from Lincolnshire in England passed away in 2009 and expressed a wish that a gift in his will would be used to purchase an inshore lifeboat named after his wife, Joyce.

Airport site should be made into major sports stadium for the west says Carroll

A 25,000 seater stadium for use by rugby, soccer, and the GAA, along with a sports centre of excellence, should be the aim of any future plans for the Galway Airport site in Carnmore.

This is the view of the Fine Gael Mayor of Coounty Galway Liam Carroll, who brokered the deal this week that saw the purchase of the former airport site by the Galway County Council and Galway City Council for €1.1 million.

Road safety measures to be implemented in Renmore — Crowe

The chairman of Galway City Council’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Michael Crowe, announced this week that a number of areas in Renmore will have traffic calming measures installed in the coming weeks.

“I met with the director of transport some time back and discussed in detail with him the requirement for traffic calming measures in parts of Renmore, and indeed the continuous speeding of vehicles across the entire area,” Cllr Crowe said. “I requested that officials examine a number of neighbourhoods and last month I received a report which was brought to the council meeting. Three areas within Renmore were identified. They are Lurgan Park, Ballyloughane Road, and Lakeshore Drive.
