Ballinasloe Library to host annual soapbox competition

The Europe Direct Centre at Ballinasloe Library is organising its annual soapbox competition and is calling for entries over the next two weeks from the people of Galway. The competition is broken up into two categories, one for adults and one for under 18 years. This year’s event will once again take place in the Westside Library in Galway city on Friday November 15 at 8pm.

“Citizens are at the Heart of the EU” is the topic of discussion for this year’s competition and entrants may speak for up to three minutes and can either agree or disagree with the motion.

Speakers will be adjudicated by a panel chaired by MEP Jim Higgins on the night. Prizes will be awarded in both categories with the lucky winners walking away with an iPad each. The overall winner in Galway will also be presented with a trip to Brussels, sponsored by Jim Higgins, and a chance to win €1,000 by taking part in the All-Ireland Soapbox final, which will take place in Dublin Castle later in November.

Entries will be accepted in both Irish and English. The closing date for entries is November 14. To enter, contact Ballinasloe Library on (09096 ) 43464, email [email protected], or log on to europedirect.ie
