Cllr Terry O’Flaherty’s relative Bernard Laffey was the uncle of the late Bridie O’Flaherty, the former mayor of Galway city. Bernard was born in Clooncah, Woodlawn, and at the age of 20 was serving in the first battalion of the Irish Guards.

The Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board is offering its highly successful diploma in radio studio production again this October at its media centre in Gort. The City & Guilds diploma is a 40 week course which aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the radio industry either at home or abroad. The course is due to commence on October 20 next. It stands out among other courses in that participants are trained for industry, by industry professionals. Anyone interested should register for the course at the local employment services or Intreo office. Training allowances are available to eligible students.

A High Court injunction is being sought by Friends of the Irish Environment to force the cessation of water extraction from a lough in Connemara.
The injunction - taken under Section 160 of the Planning and Development Act - demands Marine Harvest remove the 3km long, 225mm pipeline, which is to abstract water from Loughaunare to Ardmore townlands. The move by FIE comes after the Galway County Council ruled that the development was unauthorised and that it required planning permission. Marine Harvest has applied for retention of the pipeline.

As the first shipment of emergency water supplies to Inis Meaín began yesterday a Galway West TD has called on the Government to quash water charges for islanders who have been subject to water shortages and rationing throughout the summer.
Describing the crisis on Inish Meáin and Inis Óirr as “completely unacceptable”, Fianna Fáil TD Éamon Ó Cuív called on the new Minister for Rural Development Ann Phelan and Minister for the Gaeltacht Joe McHugh to develop a co-ordinated policy which not only deals with the water shortages but also outlines a comprehensive charging plan for islanders.
