Galway holidays for Chernobyl children secured

Children from Belarus will continue to spend summer holidays in Galway following an agreement between the governments of both countries after several months of negotiations.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, said the uncertainty that was hanging over future visits by the children had caused great distress both in Belarus, which suffered the worse effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and to host families throughout County Galway.

The Galway junior girls team that comprised Sorchal Jennings, Grainne Kennedy, Naoise O’Flaherty, Lisa Scully, and Aimee Walsh finished in first place in the junior team pool lifesaving final, ahead of Clare and Wicklow.

Portiuncula jobs at risk if nurses’ union action escalates, warns HSE

The HSE warned staff at Portiuncula Hospital this week that services will be curtailed and jobs put at risk if industrial action threatened by the Irish Nurses Organisation goes ahead.

The comment came in the lead up to the nursing union holding a lunchtime protest yesterday (Wednesday) outside the 206 bed Ballinasloe facility in support of five senior nurse managers who have been on sick leave since last November. The event was addressed by the union’s general secretary Liam Doran.
