Victory for Galway desert runners

Three Galway athletes claimed victory at this year’s Gobi Desert ultra marathon. After struggling through soaring desert heat and against 128 competitors from around the world, Diana Hogan Murphy from Athenry took first place in the women’s race, Shirley Potter from Portumna was the second woman across the line, and Shane O’Rourke also from Portumna came fifth overall and first in his age group.

EU membership has never been more important for Ireland says Treacy

The Irish have an “appetite for a permanent connection” with the EU and this is proven by the fact that 80 per cent of people want Ireland to retain an EU commissioner.

This is the view of Galway East TD Noel Treacy, who was commenting on the findings of a recent study. He said last year’s No vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum “caused many across Europe to wonder whether Ireland’s commitment to, and influence in, the union was wavering”.

Barry to face sentencing for rape of French student

The Galway man who murdered Swiss teenager Manuela Riedo has been remanded in custody pending sentence for raping a young French woman at knife point in 2007.

Gerald Barry (29), of Rosan Glas, Rahoon, pleaded guilty to orally and anally raping the then 21-year-old woman near a GAA pitch in Galway city on August 16, 2007. A charge of theft in relation to the victim's personal belongings was taken into account. Mr Justice Paul Carney adjourned sentencing for the rape matter to later this week at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Galway.
