Call for return of bottle banks in Athenry

A bottle bank recycling facility for Athenry must be put in place immediately as there are plenty of sites around the town where they could be suitably located.

The Athenry Environmental Network is calling for the return of the bottle banks which were removed some months ago. The nearest site for residents of the town to recycle glass is Moneva, New Inn, or Loughrea.

“This is simply unacceptable for a town the size of Athenry,” said Patrick Creed, chairperson of the AEN. “To remove the bottle banks is a backward step by Galway County Council towards recycling in County Galway and especially in Athenry.”

The AEN is urging those who want to see the facility returned to get in contact with their local county council representative and make their views known.

The AEN will hold its next autumn meeting on September 19/20 with free talks on Wind Power for domestic use, a video on wind power, guided nature walks in the proposed New Town Park for Athenry and in Moyode Woods, as well as a clean up initiative for the town.

All events are free and more details can be found at www.athenry environmentalnetwork.com or by calling 086 - 1678503.
