Galway city commended for good impression in litter survey

An Taisce which carried out surveys on behalf of the business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) has commended Galway city for making a good impression and achieving the “good result” of 15th place and deemed ‘Cleaner than European Norms’.

The 2012 litter survey was released this week by IBAL showing that Galway city was among 22 towns out of 42 to receive the ‘Cleaner than European Norms’ designation, with a further 13 classed as ‘Clean to European Norms’. On Tuesday, it was Kilkenny that beat off stiff competition to be announced as the overall winner at an awards ceremony in the Conrad Hotel in Dublin.

Alcoholics Anonymous open public meeting

Alcoholics Anonymous will hold an open public meeting at the Galway Bay Hotel tomorrow (Friday) at 8.30pm. The organisation has more than 800 members in Galway.

The event is being held as part of the organisation’s 38th annual Galway West area convention which takes place at the weekend. Each year it is attended by about 500 members from around the globe.

Hundreds of football fans wearing club colours turned out in the city yesterday afternoon at the funeral of former Galway United footballer Tommy Keane who died suddenly last weekend.

Tommy Keane (44) died a short while after playing in a five a-side soccer tournament in the city last Friday. He had participated in an indoor tournament at the Our Lady's Boys Club centre in Sea Road, Galway, when he collapsed as he was going home.
