A draft HSE national plan which proposes “severe” staff cutbacks to the public health service is “insulting to hardworking staff” according to a local nursing union official.

The Bothar Stiofain Combined Residents Association is holding its annual spring clean event on Sunday, starting at 2pm.
The meeting point is the entrance of the Cloch Ard estate on Bothar Stiofain. Gillian Scahill, coordinator of the spring clean, is calling on all residents to come out and help on Sunday.

A Scottish man, known to the Garda Drugs Squad, was sentenced to five months in jail for possession and drug dealing offences.
The Galway District Court heard this week that although 31-year-old Edward Nugent had no previous convictions he was known by gardai as being involved in drugs and had been caught red-handed.

Barely two weeks after he was nominated to stand as Fianna Fáil’s North West candidate for the European elections, MEP Seán Ó Neachtain made the surprise announcement on Monday that he would not run again.
Mr Ó Neachtain said his decision was taken on health grounds and his decision has prompted tributes from both colleagues and opponents.

The faces, lives, and stories of people in Mervue’s Loughnane Terrace, St James Road, and Quinn Place, have been captured in paint and the printed word in Mervue Portraits, a new exhibition commissioned by the Galway City Council.
Mervue Portraits, a new public art commission by artist Christopher Banahan and writer Michael O’Loughlin, will be launched - along with an accompanying publication - by the Mayor of Galway councillor Pádraig Conneely in the Ballybane library on Saturday at 3pm.
