Put pressure on for Oughterard sewage treatment plant says Welby

The Galway County Council has advertised for consultants to draw up contract documents for the design, building, and operation of the new sewage treatment plant for Oughterard.

The advertisement also includes the contract for a collection network to service the new plant. The advertisement for consultants has a closing date of June 22.

The news has been welcomed by Independent Connemara councillor Thomas Welby. He said: “This is a very welcome development and it is moving the process of the construction of a new treatment plant a step closer to completion, particularly as the existing plant is deficient and contributing to ongoing pollution to Lough Corrib.”

Cllr Welby added that it is “critical” that local representatives apply “maximum pressure” on the Galway County Council and the Department of the Environment to “complete this essential infrastructure as quickly as possible”.
