Walsh becomes new FG leader in city

Councillor Brian Walsh has been elected as the new Fine Gael leader on the Galway City Council replacing long serving former councillor John Mulholland.

Cllr Walsh said his focus now was to help deliver two seats for Fine Gael in the next General Election and the party organisation in the city will “have a big role to play in this”.

Citylink expands route network with wi-fi on buses

Galway based bus operator Citylink has expanded its popular service, and now has wifi on-board all coaches. The independent company offers 15 daily services to Dublin and Dublin airport. There are eight direct services from Galway to Shannon with additional departures from Galway at 5.30am, 11.30am, and 2.30pm, and a new departure from Shannon to Galway at 9.30am.

Galway students accepted for anthology of poetry and art

Three Galway students have had their entries accepted for the Eurochild Anthology of Poetry and Art 2009. The successful candidates are Nina Dorogaia, Teniola Olaleye, and Lauren Crawford from Grianach House school in Galway . The launch of the book will take place in Cork on June 26. Eurochild is a network of organisations and individuals working in and across Europe to improve the quality of life of children and young people.

Conneely win and Eames setback in county puts mayor in frame for second FG role

Having secured re-election to the Galway City Council, Fine Gael Mayor Pádraig Conneely now has his sights set on Dáil Éireann and is determined to be on the Fine Gael Galway West ticket at the next general election.

Mayor Conneely would have liked to top the poll in Galway City Central on Saturday, but that honour was to go to Labour’s councillor Billy Cameron. Nonetheless Mayor Conneely polled an impressive 1,012 first preferences and was able to strut proudly around the count centre in Westside before being elected on the fourth count with a combined vote of 1,059.
