More than €700 worth of cheques, belonging one unlucky company, were forged by a crafty Ballybane teen who stole the chequebook from a car, the Galway District Court heard last Monday
However Damien Barry’s attempt to cash these cheques and make off with the money were unsuccessful.
Inspector Sean Glynn told the court that on September 22, 2008, the 18-year-old with an address at 148 Rahylin Glebe, Ballybane, tried to cash an AIB cheque, in the name of Ecoslat Bio-Fuels Ltd, for €300 at Centra on Baile an Choiste. Barry then tried to cash a similar cheque for €233 the following day at Centra, Tuam Road, and then a cheque for €243 at Londis, Tuam Road. The court heard that the cheque book had been stolen from a car in Ballybrit on September 22.
The court heard that the defendant then broke into a car at Mervue church on September 28, 2008. He smashed through the side window and caused damage to the inside of the car worth €715.
Defence solicitor Valerie Corcoran said that her client had been unsucessful in cashing the cheques and that he still has to repay €3,500 in compensation for a car that was broken into.
The defendant was remanded on continuing bail to November 23, 2009. The conditions of the remand include a curfew of between 8pm and 8am and that he be of good behaviour and not come to Garda notice
