All because the lady loves a party

Man steals 12 bottles of whiskey for girlfriend’s birthday

A loved-up but cash strapped man was fined at Galway District Court this week for stealing 12 bottles of whiskey, worth of €200, for his girlfriend’s birthday party.

David Iobashvili (26 ) with an address at Great Western House, Eyre Square, pleaded guilty last Monday to the theft at Lidl, Doughiska, on April 23, 2009.

Inspector Sean Glynn told the court that at 12.30pm the defendant entered the store and stole the 12 bottles of whiskey to the value of €233 and left without paying. He said that all the property was recovered.

Defence solicitor Valerie Corcoran said that her client was a Georgian national who came to this country as a refugee and received only €19 per week. She said that Iobashvili was going out with an Irish woman and had initially got her flowers for her birthday but when she wanted a party he took as many bottles as he could.

Judge Mary Fahy convicted and fined the defendant €300 payable forthwith from bail money already lodged.
