A man who assaulted a young woman in a hospital car park, because of feuding between their two families, and then knocked down a pedestrian as he rushed to hire a suit for his wedding, received an 11 month jail sentence at Galway District Court last Monday.

Zikomo, a local charity dedicated to fostering long-term self sufficiency of rural communities in southern Malawi, has launched this years selection of fundraising Christmas cards. A small team from Galway have been developing this community to community link since 2002. Four NUIG graduates returned this autumn from Malawi having completed the building of a second community centre. The furnishing and equipping of this centre will be completed thanks to the €1,200 raised by the university choir and orchestra. In addition, with the help of the Galway County Council, Zikomo can now also install a solar panel on one of the community centres. Through the sale of the new range of Christmas cards Zikomo hopse to install a second solar panel. Card collections contain four photos by award winning photographer Pat O'Connor, and Malawian artist Martin Mchekeya. Cards are available in Dubray bookshop, Clarenbridge Antiques, Charlie Byrne’s, and Evergreen Healthfoods in the Galway shopping centre.
