Lit’n’Deb to host debate on gay marriage

Is marriage only to be between a man and a woman? Is marriage not about the love two people feel for each other regardless of gender?

If the State says certain people cannot get married because of their sexual orientation, is this not a denial of their rights, given that discrimination against sexual orientation is frowned on in most other areas?

These are just some of the many questions raised by the issue of gay marriage which has increasingly come to the fore in debates about the future of Irish society in recent years.

NUI, Galway’s Literary and Debating Society will be discussing this issue when it hosts a debate on gay marriage entitled This House Would Grant Same Sex Couples all the Same Rights as Heterosexual Couples in the Kirwan Lecture Theatre, main arts concourse, NUI Galway, this evening at 7pm.

Brian Merriman, artistic director of this year’s Dublin Gay Theatre Festival will be speaking in favour of this motion, and in opposition will be the Galway born independent senator Ronan Mullen.

Students and the public are welcome to attend. For more information see www.literaryanddebating.com
