The High Kings return to Co Galway

THE HIGH Kings, the Irish balladeer group who have taken the US by storm, are returning to Ireland for a show in the The Black Box Theatre on Thursday June 18 at 8pm.

The High Kings - Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey, and Darren Holden - are produced by David Downes (who also created the Celtic Woman phenomenon) and boast a remarkable musical lineage.

Stagecoach Agency to represent Galway students

THE STAGECOACH Agency, the largest professional children's casting agency in Europe, will represent Stagecoach Galway students from Tuesday June 16.

The agency, part of Stagecoach Theatre Arts Schools represents more than 2,000 students. Galway principal John Lucey said: “This is an exciting development, as geographically, we have not enjoyed as many castings as Stagecoach Dublin in the past, this now changes and puts our students on an even keel.”

THE 21ST Galway Film Fleadh will take place from Tuesday July 7 to Sunday July 12 and aspiring film makers are being encouraged to enter the fleadh’s Pitching Award.

The Pitching Award is an opportunuity for all aspiring filmmakers to experience making a pitch to a panel of judges. The overall winner will receive €3,000 to enable him/her to further develop scripts and film making skills.

The Easter Rising and Europe

DESPITE THE general perception that the massive advances in technology threaten the future of the printed book, the parallel growth in the number of new publications would suggest the contrary.

This is certainly true in the case of historical material, especially, at least in Ireland, in the case of books relating to the 1916 Rising. At present, Mercier Press IS publishing at least one new volume a month dealing with various aspects of the War of Independence and the lead up to it. At this rate, by the time we reach the centenary of the Rising, every county with have at least one book describing its part in the fight for Irish freedom. Even government ministers are getting in on the act with the Collins Press publishing Michael Martin’s Freedom To Choose: Cork and Party Politics 1918-1932.

New book published on The Quiet Man

THE QUIET Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara remains one of the best loved films of all time, and is now the subject of a new book, edited by two Galway based academics.

The Quiet Man...and Beyond: Reflections on a Classic Film, John Ford and Ireland, edited by Seán Crosson and Rod Stoneman and published by The Liffey Press, will be launched today in the Huston School of Film & Digital Media as part of the American Conference for Irish Studies 2009.
