County council receives major grant for roadworks

A total of €205,000 is to be spent for repair and maintenance work on roads throughout the county under the Early Start Programme for 2010.

The Galway County Council has been given €90,000 for work on the Ballinvoher Road; €25,000 on the Coolarne Road; and sums of €30,000 each for the Athenry to Tuam Road; the Cregmore Road, and the Lydican Road.

Galway is well familiar with the poetry slam, where poets stand in front of an audience and recite a poem, often from memory, while acting and performing the work, to give it a greater sense of drama.

Rail commuters are being ‘ripped off’ by ‘expensive tickets’ says Athenry Greens

Rail commuters in the west of Ireland are being “ripped off” by having to pay for “the most expensive commuter rail tickets” in the country.

This is the view of Green Party representative for Athenry Patrick Creed. According to Mr Creed, the cost of an annual rail ticket from Athenry to Galway is €1,230 while “tickets for the same distance” in the rest of the country are “much cheaper”.

An organisation committed to improving the lives of people with physical disabilities will celebrate its 50th anniversary later this month.

The Irish Wheelchair Association, which was founded in 1960 by a small group of wheelchair users, will begin its celebrations on Friday February 19. Today, the organisation has grown into a vibrant network of 20,000 members and more than 2,000 staff as well as many dedicated volunteers.
