New hospital consultants for Ballinasloe

Two new consultants have joined the team at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe. Dr Niall Gough is a consultant radiologist while Mr Brendan Harding is a general surgeon with a special interest in gastrointestinal surgery.

Dr Gough is a graduate of UCD and a former consultant radiologist at Letterkenny General Hospital where he established and led a busy interventional radiology service. His key interests are in body imaging (including chest, abdomen, cardiac CT and MRI ) and interventional radiology.

As well as complementing the extensive radiology services already available at the hospital Dr Gough hopes to add to the range of body imaging services there.

Mr Brendan Harding is a general surgeon with a special interest in gastrointestinal surgery. He has worked in Dublin, London, Galway, The King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, The James Paton Memorial Hospital, Newfoundland, Canada, where he was the chief of surgery and at the Erne Hospital and Tyrone County Hospital in Northern Ireland.

He obtained a master’s degree in surgery from the National University of Ireland for research on the spleen which was carried out over a two year period at NUI Galway. He is keen to strengthen links with general practitioners to develop direct access for minor procedures and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
