CUA welcomes external advisers to support flexible learning and digital capability project

The Connacht-Ulster Alliance (CUA) of GMIT, LYIT and IT Sligo are building the digital and flexible learning capability of staff and students in its eight campuses in the West and North West in its efforts to meet the criteria to apply for Technological University (TU) designation.

The ‘Innovative Opportunities Transforming Education Project’ known as iNOTE has been awarded €2.8m funding under the Higher Education Innovation and Transformation Fund to develop these new flexible learning options in the three institutes. The iNOTE project aligns with, and will form a direct response to, the key system objectives for the Higher Education System 2018 -2020.

Kyne welcomes funding for Galway’s animal welfare organisations

Minister Seán Kyne has welcomed the allocation of €87,000 to animal welfare organisations in Galway.The funding is part of a €2,906,000 allocation by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed to 106 animal welfare organisations across the country.

“The organisations benefiting include Galway SPCA which has received €40,000, MADRA and Pro Animale Ireland CLG both received €12,000 each, along with funding allocations for Fellenberg Foundation Ireland Ltd, Forgotten Horses Ireland, Galway & Claddagh Swan Rescue, Galway Cat Rescue and Renvyle Cat and Dog Rescue,” he said.

Rail greenway for Athenry would not work as it does not have Mayo scenery, Rail Corridor meeting told

Converting the Western Rail Corridor around Athenry and north Galway into a greenway would not be as successful as the Mayo Greenway, because it has inferior landscape and scenery, a meeting in Athenry was told last Thursday night.

The meeting was addressed by Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy MEP, Cllr Gerry Murray, Natasha Warde and Louis O’Hara, as well as Noel Doherty of Future Looking Athenry Group (FLAG). Speaking during the meeting, Athenry Sinn Féin’s Louis O’Hara said it is crucial that the Western Rail Corridor is reopened to deliver balanced regional development.

Galway and the west of Ireland have become a hotbed for entrepreneurial activity in recent years. In fact, you may not know it but the word “entrepreneur” was coined by an Irishman from the Wild Atlantic Way. Richard Cantillon, born in the coastal town of Ballyheigue, County Kerry, came up with the first known definition of an entrepreneur in the business sense in his French book “Essai”. He defined entrepreneurs as “non-fixed income earners who pay known costs of production but earn uncertain incomes, due to the speculative nature of pandering to an unknown demand for their product”. Would you believe that Cantillon’s definition is from 1730, nearly three hundred years ago? It could have been written just yesterday.

Minister Zappone appears unaware of issues facing childcare sector – Rabbitte

Fianna Fail Spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs, Anne Rabbitte has expressed her complete shock that Minister Katherine Zappone was unaware of the huge issues facing childcare providers in terms of business costs.

This comes after Minister Zappone stated that “up until the last couple of weeks we weren’t receiving very many contacts from providers about concern around insurance costs, we weren’t.”
