Margaret Atwood, the leading Canadian author and Booker Prize winner for The Blind Assassin and The Testaments, and whose The Handmaid's Tale has become of the great works of Feminist fiction, will be in Galway in 2020.
Ms Atwood is coming to Galway as part of the 2020 European Capital of Culture, where she will take part in the Wild Atlantic Women strand of events on Sunday March 8 and which will tie in with International Women's Day. She will take part in a public conversation with the journalist Susan McKay.
Susan McKay will also conduct a public interview with the actor Siobhan McSweeney, who plays Sister Michael in Derry Girls. Other Wild Atlantic Women events include Ragadawn, an outdoor sunrise performance by international poet and sound artist Caroline Bergvall, and Jan Carson, winner of the EU Prize for Literature, in a discussion about her new novel The Fire Starter.
Galway 2020 will be launched on Saturday February 8 with an opening ceremony produced by Wonderworks, the team responsible for Olympic opening ceremonies in Athens, London, and PyeongChang. The programme of events for the year features more than 1,900 events. New additions to the programme include influential be avant-garde artist Laurie Anderson, as well as epic displays by artist Tobias Hutzler.
