The Irish Osteoporosis Society and International Pelvic Physiotherapy Management are jointly running a seminar for the general public on Osteoporosis and Pelvic Floor Muscle Dysfunction. The seminar will be held in the Ardilaun Hotel, Taylor’s Hill, Galway on Friday February 25 from 7-9pm.

There will be three speakers on the night, Ms Michele O’Brien, CEO, The Irish Osteoporosis Society, Ms Aoife Ni Eochaidh, Chartered Physiotherapist, International Pelvic Physiotherapy Management, and Prof Moira O’Brien, President, The Irish Osteoporosis Society.

And so it has come to this. That after a robust debate and process of consultation on the local issue which saw the highest level of engagement for decades, what has come to light is the extent of the written threats and online abuse that emanated over the past few weeks.

I listened to the Mayor of the city open her heart this week about the abuse that she and her fellow councillors received during the course of the cycleway process. Our Mayor is a formidable politician who is never reluctant to throw herself into the fire of any political debate. It is not as if she is thin-skinned or overly sensitive, but she spoke with great conviction this week in the wake of the contentious vote on the toll that this abuse takes on people.

Clubs benefit from sports grant

Athenry Golf Club is to benefit from the Government’s new funding package for community sports.

The club’s application received a grant approval of €150,000 from the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme which has announced €144 million in grants to 1,900 applications across a wide range of sporting activities throughout the country. Projects in County Galway will receive grants worth €10 million overall, while another €6 million is in reserve for re-applications for unsuccessful projects.

Standing beside Mary Bennett, we looked down at Shop Street from the vantage point of her office in Treasure Chest. While the street seemed lively and joyful under a blanket of much-awaited sunshine, Mary quietly pointed out how only a handful of shopping bags were to be seen. An abundance of people strolled down the street, laughing, enjoying the music emanating from buskers, but hardly anybody had a shopping bag in hand. The name “shop street” certainly seemed ironic. The city centre, although brought to life once again, was nowhere near as busy as it had once been, pre-pandemic.

Work on path and cycleway to Oranmore station begins
