Upgrade of internal road at Rinville cemetery welcomed

Councillors Liam Carroll who represents the Athenry/Oranmore Municipal District and PJ Murphy, a representative for the Kinvara/Gort Electoral Area have this week welcomed the commitment from Galway County Council’s Environment section to complete a much needed upgrade of the internal road at Rinville Cemetery in Oranmore.

Cllrs Carroll and Murphy have received representations from a number of people in the area who are regular visitors to the resting place of their deceased loved ones and who have campaigned for the existing shale like existing internal roadway in the Cemetery to be replaced with a more modern tarmac finished surface.

According to Cllrs Carroll and Murphy, the existing surface has proven to be very challenging for people visiting the Cemetery who are wheelchair bound or who may have mobility issues. Galway County Council, who are joint owners of Rinville Park in partnership with Galway City Council have committed to undertaking necessary drainage works and a tarmac resurfacing of approximately 140 metres of roadway from the internal gates of the cemetery down towards the park and the sea front.

The proposed drainage works are due to commence within the next two weeks and when complete the resurfacing of the internal road will begin with John Madden & Sons Ltd, Civil Engineers, having been appointed by Galway County Council to undertake the necessary construction works on the project.

Cllr Carroll said that when complete the upgraded road surface would make it much safer and easier to negotiate, for wheelchair bound users or people with mobility issues to attend funerals or visit the graves of their loved ones.

He further stated that he was hopeful that the works would be completed in advance of the Summer Remembrance Mass which is due to take place in Rinville Cemetery at 6.30pm on August Bank Holiday Monday August 1.

The two Elected Councillors thanked Environment section engineer Mike Melody and senior engineer Rachel Lowe for responding so promptly and positively to their requests to have the much needed works at Rinville Cemetery undertaken this summer.
