Connolly welcomes improvements to Eyre Square appearance

Cllr John Connolly has welcomed the recent works that have been undertaken in Eyre Square.

In recent weeks the grass surface has been replaced, with enhanced public lighting also installed.

A thorough cleaning occurred of the paving around the Browne Doorway and the Quincentennial Fountain.

“With the emphasis in recent years on outdoor living and dining, Eyre Square became an even busier location and was used extensively as a location for outdoor socialising,” Cllr Connolly says.

“This had an impact on the appearance of the Eyre Square and last October, the Fianna Fáil group in the council called for a remediation plan for the square.

“Among those issues we sought to prioritise included enhanced public lighting, better litter management and an increased Garda presence. It’s great to see some of this work now occurring.”

Cllr Connolly hopes that the Galway City Council will now afford some attention to Eyre Square North.

“Eyre Square is synonymous with the city and often provides visitors with their first or final impression of Galway,” he adds.

“I have asked the council to give some consideration to enhancing the area of Eyre Square North which needs some attention. The area is somewhat devoid of colour or plant life when compared to the rest of the Square.

“The installation of some plants and flowers would brighten up this area. I also continue to pursue the condition and conservation of the Browne Doorway. I have been advised that a conservation report in relation to the Browne Doorway will be updated shortly and once completed, it will be brought forward for the Council’s consideration.”

He concluded: “The report will examine all preservation and display options and outline how the best outcomes might be achieved.”
