Bohs strengthen Lorient links with successful trip

Last year, Galway Bohemians were asked to participate in a twinning project between Galway and Lorient. Bohs have been going through a massive rejuvenation over the past decade and the committee agreed to take on this mammoth task which saw 44 young players sign up for the trip.

‘Definitely, I am a Galway girl, very much so, I’m from Barna’, Claire Hanna MP replies when asked where exactly she is from. Claire was on one of her regular visits from her home in Belfast to her birthplace in Barna, Co. Galway, when we sat down last week to discuss her journey from rural county Galway to the House of Commons in Westminster.

For almost four decades, the family have maintained very close links with Galway, and Claire describes the house in Barna as their ‘spiritual home’.

A place that is welcoming to all

Over the next few weeks, Galway will one again thankfully feel the rush of fresh blood through its veins when thousands of students come here for an experience that one hopes will be a positive one, and will help them forge a link with this city that they will hold for the rest of their lives.

After the few years we have had, we are glad to welcome them all back fully and to look forward to them using the city as a base to learn about life and about their chosen subjects in the third level colleges.

Galway Sea Scouts represent Ireland at Dutch National Sea Scout Festival

Like ‘Disneyland for Sea Scouts’ is how one of our Sea Scouts described Nawaka, the National Water Camp they attended in Zeewolde, Netherlands. Held every running years and running for 10 days, the Sea Scout festival is one of the largest of its kind and this year, Port of Galway Sea Scouts returned with 27 scouts and eight leaders to represent Ireland at the event.

With 7,000 scouts and staff on site, the Nawaka village had a real festival feel, complete with popup shops, exhibitions and activities to keep everyone entertained and provided for. The opening ceremony saw the entire compliment of boats descend upon the local harbour of Zeewolde, which was awash with the brightly coloured Lelievlet Boats that each Sea Scout group paints in their group colours.

Independent TDs Sean Canney and Deputy Noel Grealish have called on the Government to provide additional school buses to cater for children with concessionary tickets who are being refused school transport for the upcoming year.

Independent TD for Galway West, Noel Grealish said he has been inundated with calls from parents of children who had previously availed of concessionary tickets and who are no longer eligible, given the increase in applications for school transport, due to the fact the service is free of charge this year.”
