Cheevers criticises lack of grit funding for city estates

Fianna Fáil councillor Alan Cheevers has criticised the department of local Government for not allocating funding to grit pathways and roads in council housing estates across the city.

He believes it is a serious health and safety issue currently that there is only funding to grit main roads.

New exhibition at Galway City Museum

The new civil war exhibition, ‘War of Friends, 1922-23: The Civil War story of Pádraic Ó Máille and Liam Mellows’ is now running at Galway City Museum. The exhibition was officially launched by the Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr. Clodagh Higgins. It was created by Galway City Museum as part of Galway City Council’s Decade of Centenaries Programme 2022, and funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media to commemorate events of local and national significance.

The number of families in emergency accommodation has increased further, with the latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government revealing a 28% year on year increase in the number of families in emergency accommodation in the West during October.

With the recent cold weather and rising food and fuel poverty coming on top of the housing crisis, Galway Simon Community is deeply concerned about the number of families seeking assistance this Winter.

Six crew members will be carrying pagers for the first time this Christmas at Galway RNLI. As the charity launches its Christmas appeal asking for help to continue its lifesaving work at sea, Aaron Reilly, James Corballis, Aaron Connolly, Sean McLoughlin, Ian Claxton and Shane Austin will be among the lifeboat crew preparing to drop their festive plans and go to the aid of someone in need if their pager sounds over the Christmas period.

Cabinet green light moves elective hospital at Merlin Park a step closer

Galway's much needed elective hospital moved a step closer last evening after the Cabinet signed off on the next stage of its design and planning, meaning the HSE can move ahead with the preliminary design and procurement phase.

At the same meeting, Cabinet approved the emerging preferred site for the new hospital at Merlin Park; and the development of an interim Surgical Hub in Galway as an interim measure to help reduce the waiting list for elective procedures.

Tesco appeal collects €16,607 worth of food and essential items in Galway

Tesco colleagues and customers nationwide delivered the most successful Annual Food Appeal in its 10-year history in recent days. The annual Food Appeal in-store and online saw customers donate €230,000 worth of food and essential household items to support local community organisations, in partnership with FoodCloud. To further support those in need this Christmas, Tesco has topped up the Appeal with a 20% bulk donation of food, meaning over €275,000 worth of food and household necessities will be donated to communities nationwide.

After a record year of entries in 2021, the Audiology Medical Service’s ‘Christmas Carol School Competition’ returns for the third year. Schools throughout Ireland are invited to submit videos singing their favourite Christmas songs to win a cash prize of €1000.

Primary schools nationwide are eligible to enter, with teachers required to email a video/link of their entry to Audiology Medical Services. Submissions are welcomed in a wide range of styles, with extra points given for Lámh or sign language. Shortlisted finalists are selected by a panel of judges, with winners chosen by public vote.

Gift a Dog’s Dinner to a MADRA rescue dog this Christmas

Puppies Ted, Tia, Toby, Tara and Tommy were born in foster care after their young mum Tilly was abandoned while heavily pregnant. Luckily for her, she was rescued by MADRA (Mutts Anonymous Dog Rescue and Adoption) and instead of giving birth on the side of a road, her puppies were born in the comfort of a loving foster home.

F: I remember moving from Monivea Road to Castlelawn in 1979, transporting our stuff in our blue VW Beatle, i was a young ladeen, Mam’s dresser fell off the trailer, it was left in smithereens! Larry O’Flaherty, Bridie’s husband, was out with the sweeping brush cleaning it up! Great people.

Real value in €3.3m Galway community centre investments, says Cannon

Events to mark centenary of Mellow’s execution

A public commemoration is to take place at the Liam Mellow’s Statue in Eyre Square this coming Sunday, December 11 to mark the centenary of the execution of Liam Mellows.

Liam Mellows was a central figure in the movement towards Irish Independence in the early 20th century. Were it not for Mellows, the Easter Rising would not have occurred anywhere outside of Dublin. He organised the rebels in Galway and inspired many to join the revolutionary forces.
