A number of county councillors have called on Galway County Council to do all it can to progress work to find a new route to replace the R336 Bearna to Scríb via Ros an Mhíl road as, according to Spiddeal based councillor Seosamh Ó Laoi “there is a dire need for a road out in south Connemara”.

Driving licence service moves from council to NDLS centres

The motor tax office at Galway County Council will from tomorrow no longer issue or renew driving licences or learner permits as the responsibility will be transferred to the National Driving Licensing Service (NDLS) centres as part of the Government’s plans to centralise the system and bring in more stringent security measures.

At the council meeting on Monday councillors were told that from Friday, October 25, the local authorities will no longer be involved in issuing driving licences and that starting from Tuesday, October 29, NDLS centres will take over the service. There will be a full-time NDLS centre located in Ballybrit Business Park and another part-time centre located at the Station House Hotel in Clifden.

GMIT student numbers rise as lecturer numbers fall

New figures released by the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) show a massive increase in student enrolments in Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) at a time when both staff levels and budgets have plummeted. The union has warned of the hugely detrimental effects of cutbacks on the sector.

Between 2008 and 2013, GMIT has lost the equivalent of 47 fulltime lecturers - a decrease of 12 per cent - as a result of cutbacks. Meanwhile, student enrolments between 2008 and 2012 grew by 495 or 7.75 per cent with further growth expected when the 2013 figures are available. Tribute to a friend, tutor and tradesman

Jack Conneely who passed away recently was the last surviving member of the Conneely brothers of Market Street, Galway and Conneely Undertakers.

On hearing the death of this fine tradesman I thought back to that September morning back in 1970 as a young country fellow, after leaving the Vocational School in Athenry I travelled the ten miles from my home on my brother's Honda 50 to commence my carpentry apprenticeship at Hickey Boats on the Dublin Road, It was the only boat yard in Galway City at the time. My heart was thumping with different nervous thoughts going through my head.
