The Galway People of the Year Special Achievement Award which will be presented at the annual awards black tie gala in the Galway Bay Hotel on Friday next November 1 goes to the Galway senior and intermediate camogie teams and management.
The award will be accepted by team captains Lorraine Ryan and Sinead Keane on behalf of the 55 girls on both panels, and by the manager of both teams Tony Ward on behalf of the management team. This was a special year for Galway camogie — players, management,officers, camogie board, and supporters. For many of those players who have been great servants of Galway camogie over many years it was the fulfilment of their childhood sporting ambition and for Tony Ward who managed both teams and the rest of his management team who masterminded this remarkable double, it was a very special achievement
The Galway People of the Year Awards which is one of the highest accolades a person can receive in the county is now one of the highlights of the Galway social calendar and a large attendance is once again expected to support the twelve award winners who have done their communities and their county proud at home and abroad.
The other people to be honoured are:
— Sister de Lourdes Fahy, Kiltartan Gregory Cultural Society, genealogist, historian, author and Ireland Reaching Out.
— Marie Harrington, Galway for her selfless voluntary work for Galway Simon.
— Frank Glynn Milltown for community involvement
— Professor Tim O’Brien director of REMEDI and Head of Medicine NUI Galway.
— Paul Hayes and Stephen Macken receive a joint award for their contribution to the Sunni Mae Trust.
— Noel Meehan, Specsavers Galway, for his voluntary work with Vision Aid Overseas and Galway Lions club.
— Caltra sisters Aine and Mary Booth and their friend Lisa Landers who have done so much for cystic fibrosis locally.
— John Crumlish and Paul Fahy from the Galway Arts festival.
— The Wild Swans Theatre Co, Gort who have performed a myriad of plays over the years.
— The Friends of Belarus North Galway who give up their holiday time to work in orphanages in Belarus and Russia.
— The Ballymacward Hall Committee for their voluntary work over the years and whose youth discos are famous through out the west of Ireland.
Groups, clubs, organisations, societies and supporters of the winners can buy individual tickets or book their own table for the glitzy event The show will be broadcast live on Galway Bay fm and entertainment will be provided by Charade and comedian Frank Ford.
