Government must stop banks from ‘hammering’ variable rate customers says Crowe

Variable rate customers across Galway are being “hammered” due to the Government’s failure to stop banks from increasing the interest rates.

Fianna Fáil city councillor Ollie Crowe has accused the Government of “sitting on its hands as” banks hike the variable rates, despite the European Central Bank’s decision to slash rates to 0.25 per cent at the start of November.

Over €3 million of cannabis seized in county

There was more than €3 million worth of cannabis seized in rural districts between January 1 and October 31 this year by Galway gardai who will undergo even further extensive training and upskilling in order to crack down on drug related crime.

Addressing the members of the Galway County Joint Policing Committee on Monday, Chief Superintendent Tom Curley said that drug related crime is an area which is “going to received major attention” and that many gardai officers in the district have already benefited from further training. He made the comment after presenting the contents of the Garda Report which showed that between January 1 and October 31 this year cannabis seizures totaling €3,202,050 had been made, with the majority of cases involving grow houses. The next biggest seizures were in cocaine which came to a total of €21,160, followed by heroin at €13,450, and ecstasy at €3,850.

The fourth international Cuisle Beatha Palliative Medicine Conference takes place on November 22 and 23 in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway, featuring 40 expert speakers from Ireland, UK, New Zealand, and Australia.

The conference is organised by Dr Dympna Waldron, palliative medicine consultant, Galway and Roscommon University Hospitals, and clinical lecturer at NUI Galway. This conference is not only about palliative care, it is about all specialities, that is what makes it such a unique and important educational meeting. Ó Cuív condemns slashing of housing aid for elderly

The Housing Aid for Older Persons Scheme has been cut by some €300,000 over the past three years, a move that will jeopardise senior citizens “living independently and securely”.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív who has reacted angrily to figures showing that the Housing Aid for the Older Persons Scheme for Galway city and county has dropped from €1 million in 2010 to €774,550 this year; and that the number of grants in Galway has been cut from 284 to 221.
