Deadline for Knocknacarra Community Centre submissions extended

The deadline for community submissions for the operation of the Knocknacarra Community Centre has been extended to Friday September 5 at 4pm.

The decision was made at Monday’s meeting of the Galway City Council and has been welcomed by councillor Catherine Connolly. The independent councillor also tabled a motion, which was unanimously agreed, that city management would work with the community and the local councillors to ensure that a private for profit entity does not take over the community centre.

Samaritans at this year’s Galway Arts Festival

Samaritan volunteers will be in the city centre this weekend providing discreet face-to-face emotional support at Eyre Square to anyone attending the Galway Arts Festival. This outreach programme will be available from Friday evening through to early Sunday. Volunteers will provide emotional support to people in need and to raise awareness of suicide. Events such as this allow Samaritans to go direct to those in emotional need who would not ordinarily come directly to them.

Changes to Barna Road traffic lights set to ease tailbacks

Hopes are high that tailbacks plaguing the Knocknacarra/Rusheen Bay area will be dramatically reduced following setting changes to the Barna Road traffic lights.

The Galway City Council’s Transportation Unit has re-set the lights to deal with the heavy traffic and tailbacks, especially those occurring on Sundays between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

Some commonage farmers may not be eligible for the Single Farm Payment from 2015 due to new regulations being imposed by the Minister for Agriculture, that is according to Fianna Fáil spokesperson on agriculture, Éamon Ó Cuív TD.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has confirmed to Deputy Ó Cuív that from 2015 on commonage farmers who do not put stock on the commonage will not be eligible for the Single Farm Payment. This is because of the new rules defining an active farmer, which says that unlike farmers farming enclosed land, those farming semi-natural land will have to have a minimum stocking on that land.
