Nolan condemns Isis beheading of journalist

Reports of the release of a second video portraying the beheading of a journalist by Islamic State has been described as an act of “barbarism” and “very distressing” by the Galway TD.

According to media reports, the Islamic State group is claiming to have beheaded reporter, Steven Sotloff who they had held captive. This follows the execution last month, by the same group, of journalist James Foley.

Crowe demands €50 million for mental health

A Galway city councillor is calling for €50 million to be set aside in Budget 2015 for mental health funding, following publication of figures showing one in seven adults in Ireland suffers mental health problems annually.

Fianna Fáil Galway City Central councillor Ollie Crowe made his call following publication of the Mental Health Commission’s annual report. The report highlighted the ‘one in seven’ figure and outlined how mental health policy is being implemented unevenly and inconsistently across the State.

Big O Taxis and Students Unions will ensure students ‘Don’t Walk Home Alone’

BIG O TAXIS have joined forces with the Students Unions in GMIT in a bid to ensure the safety of students going home late at night. This campaign is called “Don’t Walk Home Alone” and is aimed to deter students from walking home alone after a night out where they find that they have neglected to budget for their taxi.

They will go to one of the Big O offices (Domnick St or Eyre Sq – beside the Meyrick Hotel) or hail one of the many Big O taxis operating throughout the city. They will hand over their students union card to the driver who will then bring them home safely.

I loved the circus, really loved it. As a kid, it was one of the few flashes of true colour that came through in a life decidedly lived in black and white. They'd arrive in the Green a few hundred yards behind our house and from early morning, the ping ping ping of the tent pegs being hammered into the soft ground would shatter through the morning silence. By the time we'd come home from school for lunch, the tent flags would flutter above the trees and for a day or two, a little bit of magic would light up the dullness of the town. In some ways, the arrival of the circus was better than the circus itself.
