Galway’s Kevin Russell claimed this year’s 180kg section of the Natural Body Builders Federation National Championships in the Silver Springs Convention Centre in Cork on Saturday.
Russell was runner-up last season, and as a result put in place a year-long programme of disciplined training, combined with a specific diet to target this year’s title. This regime became even more focussed and intense over the last six weeks, and has resulted in him becoming All Ireland Champion in his weight division.
A former rugby player, Russell’s bodybuilding career started when he was a member of the Connacht Rugby Academy for four years where he learnt the rudiments of weights.
Bodybuilding is now a rapidly growing sport, which requires huge dedication and application in terms of training and diet to achieve the standards to compete at this level.
