The Galway Advertiser celebrates its 45th birthday today, April 16, 2015. The paper first appeared on April 16, 1970 - an eight-page edition with a print run of 7,000.

“You're mad,” a young Ronnie O'Gorman was told as he visited the businesses of Galway city in the spring of 1970, and explained to them how a free newspaper could work. “It can't work”, was the most common response to the novel idea of a newspaper for which the reader did not have to pay. Search continues for missing Galway teen

Gardaí in Salthill are continuing to appeal for information regarding the whereabouts of Yulissa Stoica (15), who has been missing from her home in Knocknacarra since last Friday.

Yulissa Stoica is five feet seven inches tall, with long brown hair and blue eyes. The teenager was last seen at the Ballymoneen Road at 2pm on Friday April 3. Anyone who has seen Yulissa or who can help in locating is asked to contact Salthill Garda Station at 091 514720, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Support for abused women vital to negotiate legal system

Women experiencing domestic violence have identified assistance from a domestic violence service as a vital support in accessing and negotiating the legal system to obtain protection from an abusive partner or ex-partner.

Research launched recently by Ivana Bacik on behalf of SAFE Ireland, the national representative body for 40 domestic violence services in Ireland, highlights the stories of 13 women and their experiences of engaging with the Gardai, the legal system, the Courts Service and the judiciary.
