Lack of space forces refuge to turn away 700 women and children

A city based domestic violence refuge was unable to accommodate almost 700 women and children seeking safety last year, due to a lack of space. These startling figures for Waterside House were revealed in COPE Galway’s annual report, published this week. It outlines that its domestic violence service supported more than 380 women and their 180 children in 2015.

Minister Harris announces a new programme involving NUI Galway to advance clinical research capability among doctors

The scheme, which will be known as Wellcome – HRB Irish Clinical Academic Training Programme, will support the intake of eight postgraduate trainee doctors per year for a five-year period, providing fully integrated clinical and research training up to consultant level.

Local study looks at experience of adults with ADHD

Author John Walsh an example of how to face up to adversity

John Walsh was first diagnosed with a tumour in his brain in the year 2000 and has undergone numerous operations and rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatment since due to the continued presence of growths in his body. He is currently living with inoperable tumours in his brain and spine.

Cappagh Park likely to be expanded to create a sporting campus

Sports clubs in the west of the city could eventually be in line for new grounds and facilities after City Hall agreed to a call from Knocknacarra councillor Donal Lyons to extend the area of Cappagh Park.

At Monday’s city council meeting, Cllr Lyons called for the park’s extension, “in view of the number of sporting clubs now requiring facilities”. He made his call via a Notice of Motion, under Standing Order 22 dealing with urgent business, arguing for the purchasing of additional zoned amenity land, which lies adjacent to the park itself.

Ó Clochartaigh demands task force be established for Ballybane

If Ballybane and its population is to “thrive and flourish in future”, a task force to “reinstate vital community supports that have either been taken away or were never put in place” is essential.

This is the view of Sinn Féin senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, who has called for such a task force, after speaking with community representatives this week to arrange a meeting to progress the project. “‘The local community has been calling for a long time for a task force with a funded person to co-ordinate the work,” he said.
