Galway Choral Association will celebrate the New Year with a special concert in aid of Console, the local charity which helps people bereaved by suicide, at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Saturday January 23 at 8pm.

Last year was one to forget in terms of crime in the city. In the Spring, we had to listen to the harrowing details of how Manuela Riedo met her end. In the midst of the Volvo Ocean race, we had the killing of young Kieran Cunningham on a night out with his pals. As I write this, another young man fights for his life in a Dublin hospital after being assaulted in the city at the end of the year.

The HSE West is appealing to the public to visit elderly relatives and neighbours to make sure they are well during the current cold spell.
A spokesperson for the local health authority says its staff, such as public health nurses and home helps, continue to visit elderly and house bound clients. However, they are having difficulty accessing some of the more remote locations.
