Interest in allotments must be ‘capitalised on’ says Connolly

More than 150 people from all over the city had already put their names down for an allotment and the Galway City Council must capitalise on this “extraordinary interest”.

This is the view of Independent councillor Catherine Connolly, who has welcomed an objective in the new Draft Galway City Development Plan to provide allotments throughout the city.

Cllr Connolly, who is also chair of the Environment Strategic Policy Committee and a member of the Parks and Recreation Strategic Policy Committee, has called for allotments to be introduced to Galway since 2006.

She put forward a motion calling for allotments to be included in the plan and this was supported by the other councillors at a recent meeting of the Galway City Council.

Cllr Connolly said interest has greatly increased with the downturn in the economy but the growth in apartment living. She is also urging those interested in having an allotment to contact the Galway City Council’s Parks and Recreation Department to ensure they are on the waiting list.
