Harris hears that GTI has outgrown its Fr Griffin Road location

A proposal to replace the ageing Galway Technical Institute (GTI) on Fr Griffin Road with a state-of-the-art and purpose-built Further Education and Training Campus on the grounds of Galway Community College in Wellpark has been forwarded by the Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) to the Minster for Further and Higher Education, Simon Harris for his consideration.

GTI has outgrown its current building and requires the addition of extra teaching spaces. It is also extremely limited in its capacity to grow the courses it offers," Minister Hildegarde Naughton said this week after she met Minister Harris to progress the project.

Stay away — Flu and Covid outbreaks sees UHG issue appeal

An outbreak of influenza and a high number of COVID-19 cases saw University Hospital Galway last night (Wednesday) appeal to the public not to visit the hospital if they are feeling unwell or have respiratory symptoms.

The hospital is currently dealing with a flu outbreak on one ward with COVID-19 impacting a further four wards. Visiting to the affected wards will be facilitated on compassionate grounds, on an exceptional basis only. To arrange a visit on compassionate grounds, the public have to contact the ward manager in advance.

Hospital winter plans unveiled

Galway University Hospital (GUH), Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) and Community Healthcare West are implementing further initiatives this Winter to support hospital admission avoidance and promote patient flow across all acute and community healthcare facilities through an integrated approach.

The initiatives will maximise the use of available resources to manage unscheduled care pressure and support an overall improvement to the patient journey. The initiatives identified for 2022/2023 are focused on established best practice in relation to admission avoidance and patient flow. An enhanced GP/Hospital Liaison will support the provision of care, in the right place at the right time.
