Athenry Drama group is more than 100 years in existence, having performed on the local and national circuit it has had many successes with several renowned plays.

Sports Aid to pass on the gear at Supermac’s

Supermac’s, Eyre Square, will hold a collection day on Saturday, December 5 for Sports Aid. Voluntary organisation Sports Aid will pass on sports gear and equipment that is not being used. The sports gear and equipment will be passed on to those who need it but may not have the resources to purchase it themselves, including schools, sports clubs, and individuals. The collection will take place from 12.30pm with prizes and surprise guests in store on the day.

Alfred the Great returns to Caherlistrane

In one final flurry to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of MGM’s multi-million dollar production, Alfred the Great, the Cinemobile announces that it will screen a special showing of the movie on location where many of the famous battle scenes were filmed at Castlehackett four decades ago.

On Sunday November 29 at 6.30pm in the car park at Caherlistrane’s GAA pitch, scores of people from near and far who took part in Alfred the Great, and who may have never yet seen themselves in it will now have a chance to view the film .

Tuesday night was horrific. The high winds drove in sheets of rain across the west and enveloped the region in a deluge. People who were in for the night huddled closer to the fire and listened to the lashing rain wallop their roofs and flood their gardens. Those of a spirtual bent would look at the raging elements and wish good fortune to all who had to brave them. Roads were covered with a sheet of rain; rivers and streams broke their banks, and in four households, heavy footsteps made their way hesitantly across the water-covered footpaths before delivering news that would change the lives of four families forever.

It’s the knock that no parent wants to hear and one that no garda, no matter how well trained or toughened, likes to make. When a parent raises a child to school-leaving age and then beyond into young adulthood, into college and into the independence and responsibilty of what comes with that, there is a sense that the most difficult part is over. That the dangers of childhood have passed. However, it is so paining, that just when the four young women were on the cusp of leaping forward into post-college life, this tragedy should take them away and rob their families of a valuable presence.
