Supermac’s, Eyre Square, will hold a collection day on Saturday, December 5 for Sports Aid. Voluntary organisation Sports Aid will pass on sports gear and equipment that is not being used. The sports gear and equipment will be passed on to those who need it but may not have the resources to purchase it themselves, including schools, sports clubs, and individuals. The collection will take place from 12.30pm with prizes and surprise guests in store on the day.
Sports Aid needs all types of sports gear and equipment including football boots, astroturf boots, footballs, hurleys, sliotars, helmets, rugby balls, equestrian wear, jerseys, sports tracksuits and shorts, sports jackets, runners, and golf clubs. Should people have heavy sports equipment at home such as old treadmills, rowing machines, equestrian equipment, free weights or bicycles they wish to pass on, Sports Aid will take their details on Saturday week, arranging a suitable date for collection. All sports gear and equipment must be in good condition and clean before it can be accepted by Sports Aid.
Pat McDonagh, managing director of Supermac’s says: “Supermac’s is delighted to facilitate Sports Aid with its collection of sports gear and equipment. This is a fantastic idea and Supermac’s will do all it can to support Sports Aid. With the horrendous flooding, and damage caused by it being felt deeply in Galway, there is more of a need than ever for an organisation such as this. Sport has a strong, positive influence on young people, something which is invaluable for their development. This year will be more difficult for people to get their hands on the equipment they need to get started or improve their performance in various sports. Supermac’s hopes this collection will be well supported, giving people opportunities in various sporting disciplines.”
Sports Aid is the brain child of Councillor Niall McNeilus: “There is a great need for sports gear and equipment throughout society at the moment,” he said. “Every year children take up sports, joining clubs and leaving to take up another sport until they find the one that suits them best. They also grow out of training gear regularly. The sports gear and equipment bought for each sport can be left idle in the back of drawers and cupboards. Also, adults may not be able to continue on in sports they have worked at due to a lack of funds for purchasing the sports gear they need. Sports Aid is an all inclusive organisation, working to collect and contribute sports gear and equipment for every sport and age group possible.”
