City council response to big freeze to cost €600,000

Gritting and salting of roadways, the repairing of leaks and burst mains, and other actions taken to reduce the disruption caused by the big freeze, and now the thaw, are expected to cost the Galway City Council in excess of €600,000.

Over the past three months this region has suffered at the hands of mother nature — first with the floods which devastated and continues to devastate lives in parts of South Galway and in and around the Claregalway area where many people are still to return to their homes.
And for the past four weeks, we have all felt the impact of the cold chill which brought our roads and transport infrastructure to a standstill and which has led to the highest number of falls and slips on ice that any of us can remember.

The body of a young Galway woman discovered in Cameroon almost a week ago, was flown home to Ireland yesterday.
Salthill native and sports injury practioner Laura Thornton, who was aged 32, was on a three week holiday in the Cameroon capital of Yaounde when she suddenly collapsed on January 2 after experiencing breathing difficulties. Ms Thornton, who ran a sports treatment and massage business in Galway city, had been trekking in the jungle with friends.

Irish based international NGO Haven is calling on Galway people to volunteer to build houses for Haitian families experiencing extreme poverty. The organisation, which works to provide houses and community development schemes in the impoverished country, will hold a meeting in Galway this evening (Thursday). The group has also appealed for donations to help stricken communities following this week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti.

An investigation into the loan dealings of Anglo Irish Bank during the height of the boom has revealed that hundreds of millions of dollars was provided to some of Ireland’s wealthiest people, including Galway businessmen, to buy luxury apartments in New York.
According to a report in a national paper yesterday an examination of loans issued by the bank over three years ago revealed that potentially hundreds of millions was lent to well-known business men in order to snap up exclusive properties in Manhattan and other upmarket areas of New York. However, some borrowers have been hit by slumping prices since the economic downturn.
