Councillors Liam Carroll who represents the Athenry/Oranmore Municipal District and PJ Murphy, a representative for the Kinvara/Gort Electoral Area have this week welcomed the commitment from Galway County Council’s Environment section to complete a much needed upgrade of the internal road at Rinville Cemetery in Oranmore.

Cllrs Carroll and Murphy have received representations from a number of people in the area who are regular visitors to the resting place of their deceased loved ones and who have campaigned for the existing shale like existing internal roadway in the Cemetery to be replaced with a more modern tarmac finished surface.

After an absence of a few years, community and voluntary activity was back to being celebrated ‘in person’ at the Cathaoirleach’s Community Awards which were held in conjunction with the Cathaoirleach’s Ball on Saturday 11th June. The Awards were organised by Galway County Council in partnership with Galway County Public Participation Network and were hosted by the Cathaoirleach Cllr Peter Keaveney, and MC for the evening broadcaster John Mulligan who warmly welcomed everyone to the Ard Rí Hotel in Tuam.

Changes in carers’ entitlements

During Carers Week we celebrate the valuable contribution made by carers in our local communities, in particular the ways in which carers support older and dependent people to continue to live in the familiar surroundings of their own homes. It is an opportune time to remind carers of some of the changes recently made to Carers Allowance, paid by the Department of Social Protection (DSP).

From June 1 2022, the capital disregard for Carers Allowance has increased from €20,000 to €50,000. The income disregards have also increased: a carer can now work for up to 18.5 hours per week and have income /earnings of €350 per week in the case of a single carer or €750 in the case of a couple and get the full Carers Allowance payment. This means carers can combine their caring duties with part-time work and still qualify for Carers Allowance.
