Elderly woman dies in Ballygar road accident

An elderly woman died when she was struck by a car close to her home in Ballygar on Monday evening. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the accident to come forward.

Kathleen Murray (85) was crossing the road near her home at The Square, Ballygar at 7.15pm on Monday when she was struck by a car. Ms Murray was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and her body was removed to Ballinasloe mortuary.

A Claddagh man was sentenced to one month in jail at Galway District Court this week after a pit bull terrier he had been walking savagely attacked another dog, causing “horrific” injuries.

Jason Shaughnessy with an address at 5 Claddagh Place was summoned to appear before Judge Mary Fahy last Monday where he pleaded guilty to being a person in charge of dog and permitting it to be in the Claddagh area while unaccompanied and while not under effectual control, contrary to Section 9 and 27 of the Control of Dogs Act 1986.

AirSpeed Telecom wins contract to provide back-up network for BreastCheck

AirSpeed Telecom, the telecommunications company which operates a nationwide licensed wireless radio transmission network, has been awarded a three-year contract to provide a back-up network for BreastCheck, the national breast cancer screening service.

BreastCheck provides free breast x-rays (mammograms) to women aged 50 to 64 years on a two yearly cycle. The National Cancer Screening Service, which runs BreastCheck, has contracted AirSpeed Telecom to provide a resilient back-up network to support its screening service.

I brought her a bag of apples on our first ‘date’. Not very romantic, I hear you say. True. And not very generous. Also true (Tesco special offer – one pound for a ‘family bag’). I was merely continuing a tradition. She was Anne Gregory and during her childhood at Coole Park, “every year John Quinn, Grandma’s great friend in New York, used to send a great case of apples to us.” So it is recorded in Anne’s beautiful book Me and Nu, Childhood at Coole. ‘Nu’ was Anne’s sister, Catherine. If you haven’t read Me and Nu, treat yourself to a copy for the New Year. It is still in print after nearly 40 years.
