Extending the Newcastle bus route will not only encourage people to not alone use public transport but it will be make life easier for the elderly, disabled, and women with buggies.
This is the view of Labour Cllr Billy Cameron who has called on Bus Éireann to extend the Newcastle route. He describes the present route as “inadequate” as it neglects three large estates in the Lower Dangan area.
According to Cllr Cameron, because the route turns at the Westwood junction onto Thomas Hynes Road and returns into the city centre, residents of Dangan Court, Dangan Heights, and Bushypark Lawns are “totally neglected” with their nearest bus stop being on the Thomas Hynes Road.
Cllr Cameron has written to the Bus Éireann area manager requesting that instead of the route turning left at the Westwood Junction, that it continue past Dangan Court and Dangan Heights and turn onto Circular Road where the terminus would be Bushypark Lawn.
“If we are to encourage the population to use public transport, a competent service must be at their doorstep,” said Cllr Cameron. “City routes should be revised on an on-going basis to accommodate the new demographics of an ever expanding city.”
