Local M&S jobs secure despite planned axing of 1,200 UK positions

The massive job losses planned for M&S stores in the UK will not impact on its Galway branch.

Local jobs are secure despite the high street fashion retailer announcing its worst sales figures for almost a decade in the UK and planning to shed more than 1,000 jobs and close 27 stores there. Some 780 jobs will go from its stores and 450 from its head office.

Reports indicate that UK sales dropped more than seven per cent in the 13 weeks prior to December 27. This is believed to be the chain’s biggest sales collapse since July to September 1999.

A spokesperson for M&S in the Republic of Ireland said there were no stores listed for planned closure here and Irish jobs were secure.

The company employs 2,800 people in the republic in 18 stores and about 70,000 in the UK.
