O’BRIENS SANDWICH Bar in Liosban has just opened a new art exhibition space and will now be displaying artworks as well as serving food.
“Having given the store a complete make over we wanted to provide a space for artists to exhibit their work,” said new space owner Aonghus McGuinness. “We approached Artspace who are based in Liosban and we were delighted Isabelle Gaborit wanted to get the project off the ground with a selection of her work.”

THE FOURTH annual Coole Music Orchestra Festival 2011 takes place at the Lady Gregory Hotel, Gort, this Sunday with a host of talented young musicians to perform two concerts.
The 2011 festival has been expanded to include intermediate level players. There will be performances from the Laois School of Music Orpheus Orchestra, Galway Junior and Intermediate Youth Orchestras, Athenry Music School Junior and Senior Orchestras, Clare Music Makers Intermediate String Ensemble, and Gort’s Coole Music Junior and Youth Orchestras.

THERE IS nothing new about the recent explosion of book clubs throughout Ireland. It could be argued that ever since two or three people discussed a book they all had read the concept of the book club was formed.
The more formal examples of the book club in modern history are the French Literary Salons and the English Coffee Shops of the 18th century.

JAPANESE POET Hisa Kagawa and Galway poet and playwright Rita Ann Higgins will be reading from their work at Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop tomorrow at 6pm.
Ms Kagawa will read her Tanka poems on the night. Tanka is a Japanese traditional poem consisting of 31 syllables with 5-7-5/7-7 Mora pattern. Rita Ann will read a selection of work from her controversial new book Hurting God.
